Bred by Corrin Stud and Blackwater Bloodstock, the colt was a first foal of the Cadeaux Genereux mare Morinqua, who was herself a Listed winner at two.

Makfi is owned by Qatar Bloodstock Ltd, and is one of three resident sires at Tweenhills Farm and Stud in Gloucestershire.
